History
Historically, Sreenivasapuram and
the broader Chemmaruthy region were part of the erstwhile Kingdom of
Travancore. Under the royal administrative setup, the region primarily
comprised agrarian lands, paddy fields, sacred groves (kavus), and
traditional spice and coconut plantations.
The locality's modern identity and
nomenclature are deeply intertwined with the social reform movement led by Sree
Narayana Guru. The area grew significantly during the mid-twentieth century
following the establishment of premier educational institutions—most notably
Sree Narayana College, founded in the post-independence era to promote higher
education for marginalized and backward communities. Consequently, the
surrounding settlement was named Sreenivasapuram in honor of Sree
Narayana Guru. Over decades, through systematic land development, migration,
and institutional expansion, it transformed into a densely populated
educational, administrative, and residential hub within the Varkala region.
