Trivandrum International Airport


















Trivandrum International Airport is located at Shanghumugham, 7 km from the city of Thiruvananthapuram, in Kerala. The longest runway is 10,000 feet in length at an elevation of 14 feet. The current official name of the city is Thiruvananthapuram, but due to its length, the name adopted by the British is still used by most travel organizations.
The airport is well connected to the West Coast of the United States by a combination of Singapore Air and Silk Air, which has direct flights between Thiruvananthapuram and Singapore. Amenities for travelers at the airport are minimal. Passenger facilities such as restaurants, postal services, money exchanges, medical aid and assitance to handicap are available.
Being the second busiest airport in Kerala Trivandrum International Airport is the first international airport of Kerala, India. Tirvandrum is the former name of Thiruvananthapuramm and the airport is 6km away from the city center and 16 km from world-renowned Kovalam Beach. Colonel Goda Verma Raja at first proposed the airport in 1932 and then the airport was part of Kerala Flying Club. Report says that from the mid of 1970s and early 80s by Air India flights international operation in the cities of Middle East begins. The cities are Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Doha, Kuwait Bahrain and Dahran. It is expected that Air Lanka and Air Male will very soon start international flight operation from this airport. This airport gets the recognition of International Airport in 1 January 1991. And this is the first international airport outside metropolitan cities. Trivandrum International Airport has direct link with Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Goa and Bangalore by domestic flights. Through this airport it is easy to go to some SAARC countries like Srilanka and Maldives as well as to the Middle East and South East Asian countries.
To accommodate the load of increasing passengers a third terminal building is built in 2006. To build a world-class terminal for the Trivandrum International Airport the Union Government has snctioned an airport modernization project of Rs.258 crore.
As AAI has constructed the terminal building on the city side and it brings a change of development in the IT sector and the tourism industry in the southern cities. All modern facilities such as escalators, elevators and aerobridges will be provided in this three-storied building with an area of 20,000 sq. meters and it can accommodate passengers of two AB-300s and one Boeing 747 at a time.
Common Users Terminal Equipment (CUTE) will be installed to give the passengers facility of checking in at any counter and for faster clearance of baggage X-ray machine will be attached to the side of the conveyor. According to the plan the floor area of check-in counter will be 950 sq. meters and arrival area will be 570 sq. meters and annual passenger handling capacity will be 13.3 lakh whereas in the parking lot 575 cars will be accommodate at the same time.
