Anchuthengu Parish St.Peter's Forane Church

Anchuthengu Parish St.Peter's Forane Church is situated in Anjuthengu near Kadakkavoor of Thiruvananthapuram District in Kerala.
The St. Peter’s Church stands as the most colourful feather on the beautiful strip of land of Anchuthengu village. It was the 15th century Portuguese Missionaries who landed at the sea shore who began the active building of this lively Christian Community here. By the beginning of the 16th century, the first church was built.
The Portuguese and the Dutch established Anchuthengu as their business capital for Pepper exports to Europe. In 1684, with the permission of the Queen of Attingal, East India Company began to build their business establishments in Anchuthengu. The Anchuthengu Fort was completed in 1695. Poothura and Kayikara form its boundaries at the south and the west respectively. The Anchuthengu Lake and the Arabian Sea form the boundaries at the east and the west respectively. It covers a geographical area of 311.22 acres.
Anchuthengu was known as Anchingal but the pronounciation of the British changed it as Anjengo which the locals now call as Anchuthengu! There is also a history that says that there were five support stones for head-loads (Anchu thangu) for head-load workers as it was a commercial hub in the past.
The St. Joseph’s School run by the parish was built in 1893 by the Portuguese Missionaries. There are two substations in the parish such as Carmala Matha Church, Chembavu and St. Mary’s Church, Puthennada. There are many institutes in the parish territory such as Sacred Heart convent, St. Mary’s Convent, Sacred Heart Malayalam and English medium schools, Anchuthengu Panchayath Office, Post Office, many Fisheries Offices, and many other NGOs. There are more than 2500 families divided into 11 wards and subdivided into 68 BCC units to facilitate effective and active participation of everyone in the acitivities of the parish as one united family! Anchuthengu Fort

Ajuthengu Fort is a 16th century building located at Anchuthengu near Kadakkavoor in Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. Anjengo or Anchuthengu  fort was originally built by British in 1690. It was one of the powerful bastions of the British empire in Kerala. The construction works were completed in 1690. The fort was once used as the first signaling station for ships arriving from England to India. The remnants of a majestic fort and the graveyard which contains the mortal remains of the British men and their families can still be seen here. Ponnumthuruthu Sivaparvathi Vishnu Temple

The Ponnumthuruthu Shiva-Parvathy Vishnu Temple (Thuruthi Temple) is located on the island of Ponnumthuruthu in the Anchuthengu Lake at Nedunganda, under the Anchuthengu Panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram district.

One of the main deities at the Ponnumthuruthu Shiva-Parvathy Vishnu Temple is Shiva-Parvathy. This idol depicts Lord Shiva bestowing blessings with Goddess Parvathy seated on his left thigh. Lord Mahavishnu is another principal deity. The Mahavishnu temple is situated to the left of the Shiva-Parvathy temple. To the right of the Shiva-Parvathy temple, there is also a shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha. In the Namaskara Mandapam in front of the Shiva-Parvathy temple, there is an idol of Nandi, the sacred mount of Lord Shiva. Amidst the groves near the lake shore, there are two sacred groves (Kavus) housing idols of Nagaraja and Nagayakshi. Of these, one Kavu is associated with Lord Shiva and the second with Lord Mahavishnu. The temple complex has been constructed with modern architectural elegance.

Devotees visit the Ponnumthuruthu Shiva-Parvathy Vishnu Temple in large numbers during Shivaratri and Ayilyam days. Special rituals and offerings are held here on those days. Ayilyam Oottu is conducted at this temple in all months except the months of Mithunam, Karkidakam, and Chingam. Every year on Shivaratri day, a large number of devotees arrive here to offer Pongala. The temple boat transports devotees to the island free of charge.

The Kalari Sree Bhadrakali Devi Temple in Nedunganda is associated with the Ponnumthuruthu Shiva-Parvathy Vishnu Temple.

Kariavattom is located in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, at a distance of 16 km. It is the headquarters of the Kerala University. The University College of Engineering, under University of Kerala, started functioning from 2000-2001 onwards at Kariavattom. Government College Kariavattom was started as a graduate section of the University College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1993, with only the first year classes of B.A. Degree courses. Kerala University granted fresh affiliation to the college in August 1997, with B.Sc courses in computer science, biotechnology, biochemistry and statistics. The B.Sc Computer Science and Biotechnology are semester courses, and B.Sc Biochemistry and Statistics are of the annual system. The formal inauguration of the new college was on 3rd July 1998

Mathoor







Mathoor is a village located on the border of Thiruvananthapuram District and Tamil Nadu. This picturesque place is about 3 km from Thiruvattar. The main attraction here is an irrigation bridge, which is considered to be the highest irrigation bridge in Asia. Thiruvattar Temple is a nearby attraction.

Kachani

Kadukkara is located near the Kerala – Tamil Nadu border in Thiruvananthapuram District. It is about 6 km south of Vellarada and about 20 km north-west of Nagercoil. Kadukkara is the starting / end point of State Highway 3.
