Thoppu (often referred to as Thoppu Street) is a prominent residential and traditional locality situated within the Balaramapuram Grama Panchayat in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Located roughly 15 km south of Thiruvananthapuram city along National Highway 66, it serves as an integral part of Balaramapuram's historic weaving cluster and urbanized settlement area.
Major local landmarks include the
historic community shrines, traditional weaver settlements, and localized
worship spaces such as the local Ganapathi Temple situated within the Thoppu
sector. Geographically, it is positioned close to the core commercial markets
of Balaramapuram—often recognized as a major trade and handloom hub—and lies
roughly 14 to 15 km south-southeast of Thampanoor (Thiruvananthapuram Central).
The nearest major transport links are the Balaramapuram Railway Station and the
Trivandrum International Airport, situated about 16 to 18 km away.
History
Historically, Thoppu and the wider
Balaramapuram region are deeply tied to the legacy of the former Kingdom of
Travancore. During the reign of Maharaja Balarama Varma (1798–1810) and his
Dalava (Chief Minister) Ummini Thampi, the region was systematically developed
into an agro-industrial and textile belt. Sovereign initiatives brought
traditional weaving communities—notably the Shaliar families from neighboring
regions—to settle in designated clusters and row-house streets to produce fine
handloom fabrics and royal attire.
