revered Thalayal Shiva Temple (also known as the Sri Bharadwaja
Rishishwara Shiva Kshetram), a landmark noted for its deep historical and

Government Karayogam Lower Primary School (Govt. KLPS). Geographically,
Thalayal lies roughly 15 km south of Thiruvananthapuram city center and sits in
close proximity to neighboring towns like Neyyattinkara. The nearest major

Airport, which are located about 12 to 15 km away.
History
Historically, Thalayal and the
broader Balaramapuram region were integral parts of the former Kingdom of
Travancore. Under the royal administration of Maharaja Bala Rama Varma (reign
1798–1810) and his Dalawa (chief minister) Ummini Thampi, the region underwent
deliberate transformation. While areas surrounding Balaramapuram were famously
developed into a major agro-industrial and handloom-weaving hub—following the
settlement of Shaliyar weaver families brought from Tamil Nadu—local pockets
like Thalayal evolved alongside this expansion, serving agricultural,
traditional craft, and residential functions. Over subsequent decades,
population growth and urbanization turned the locality into a densely populated
settlement embedded within one of the most urbanized panchayats in the
district.
