Chowara is a tranquil coastal locality and traditional fishing village situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Located south of the popular Kovalam beach stretch and roughly 10 to 12 km south of the developing Vizhinjam International Seaport area, it gets its name from the deep rock gorges that historically ringed parts of its coastline. The area functions primarily as a peaceful residential and wellness-tourism pocket framed by dense coconut groves.
Major local landmarks include the prominent hilltop Shri Dharma Shastha (Ayyappa) Temple—famous for its extensive 56-day annual festival running from November 15 to January 15—the cliffside Pulikudi-Azhimala Shiva Temple (known for its towering Shiva statue), and the antique Analothbhava Matha Church right by the coastline. Geographically, Chowara sits about 18 to 20 km south of Thiruvananthapuram city center. The nearest major transit access points are the Vizhinjam bus route network, while the Trivandrum International Airport and Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station lie approximately 20 to 24 km away to the north.
