| Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple |
The Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple is one of the most famous and ancient temples in Kerala. It is located at Kizhakkakotta in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital district of Kerala. Situated a short distance north of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the temple is positioned in the northeast corner (Iesana bhaga) of the fort wall enclosure.
The main deity of this temple is Lord Ganesha, depicted in the form of Bala Ganapathy (child Ganesha), seated on a pedestal with His right leg folded and His trunk turned to the right. The deity faces east. In this four-armed (chathurbahu) form of Ganesha, the upper right hand holds an axe, the upper left hand holds a rope (noose), and the lower left hand holds a modaka. The lower right hand is held in the Abhaya mudra pose.
Ayyappa, Goddess Durga, and Nagarajas are also consecrated as sub-deities in the temple. The idol of Lord Ayyappa is installed in a separate shrine in the southwest corner, facing east. Pilgrims going to Sabarimala wear their sacred beads (malai) and perform kettunira at this shrine. There is also an idol of Goddess Durga in another shrine located in the northwest corner.
Breaking coconuts is the most famous offering (vazhipadu) at this temple. Every day, numerous devotees come to pray to Lord Ganesha by breaking coconuts to remove obstacles and fulfill their wishes. As part of offering this ritual, believers break thousands of coconuts here. This is also the temple where the highest number of coconuts are broken in the entire state.
Even from a distance, one can have a blissful darshan of the beautiful form of Lord Ganesha. Remodeled entirely in the traditional architectural style of Kerala temples in 2019, the temple features over thirty-two carved forms of Ganesha on its various parts.
Legend and History of Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple

| Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple (Old Photo) |
The legend and history regarding the
origin of this temple are closely connected with the Nair soldiers of the
former Travancore army. The capital of Travancore was shifted to
Thiruvananthapuram in 1760 AD. Before that, Padmanabhapuram, which is part of
Tamil Nadu today, was the capital of Travancore. At that time, loyal and strong
Nair soldiers guarded the Padmanabhapuram Palace day and night. The famous
Melankodu Devi Temple is situated on one side of the fort surrounding the
palace. It is believed that the soldiers who stood guard at night in this area
used to get exhausted by the power of the fierce Goddess and would become
unconscious by dawn. Once, a soldier who was a devotee of Lord Ganesha got his
turn for night duty in this area. That day, on his way to work while bathing in
the Valliyattar river, he received a beautiful stone idol of Lord Ganesha,
about six inches in size, with its right leg folded. Considering it as the
grace of his favorite deity, he decided to keep the idol with him during his
duty hours. Miraculously, the fierce power of Goddess Melankodu did not affect
him that day. The next day morning, seeing the soldier return safely, the other
soldiers became very curious and inquired about the reason for his safety.
Initially, he showed reluctance to reveal the reason, but later he disclosed
the secret related to the Ganesha idol. From that day onwards, the other
soldiers also worshipped this Ganesha idol and subsequently consecrated and
worshipped this idol at the military camp in Udayagiri. Thus, they got
liberated from the problem that had been troubling them for ages.
When the capital was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram in 1760 AD, the soldiers brought this deity of worship also to Thiruvananthapuram and kept it under a banyan tree in the old Sreekanteswaram temple premises. Later, with the permission of the King, a small shrine was built at the place where the temple is situated today and consecrated there. The largest collection of palm leaf manuscripts that shed light on past histories is at the Padmanabhapuram Palace. They are known as Mathilakam Records. Among these, it is mentioned that three hundred coconuts were broken in this temple in 1771 AD so that rain would not obstruct the Maharaja's procession. Therefore, this temple must have been established here sometime between 1760 AD and 1771 AD. During the reign of Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma Maharaja (1860–80), when the temple was renovated, sub-deities such as Goddess Durga and Vettaykkoru Makan holding a sword befitting the army were also consecrated. After independence, the Nair Brigade merged into the Indian Army. In November 1956, the Madras Regiment of the military took over the temple. A mandapam in front of the temple was built in 1969 and a gopuram in 1997. In 2011, the idol was covered in gold and the pedestal in silver.
A system called "Thiruvathira Fund" had been established for the management of the temple. It was Major General V. N. Parameswara Pillai (O.B.E., G.O.C.), who was a Major General in the Travancore Nair Brigade (later the State Forces), who reformed this system, took steps to generate more income for the temple, and made the festivals here more attractive. It was when he was a Lieutenant Colonel that he devised ways for the temple to get more revenue through Thengayadi (coconut rolling/offering). This decision, taken by him in his capacity as the President of the Thiruvathira Committee, became a huge source of income for the temple. Furthermore, the Kulavazha Chirappu festival here became one of the major festivals in Ananthapuri (Thiruvananthapuram) itself. Tens of thousands of people, including the Maharaja, the Diwan, and members of the royal family, used to arrive to participate in the festival. From Vettimuricha Kotta to Puthan Kecheri, there were decorations and arches in connection with the festival. Renowned artists used to arrive to perform cultural programs for the festival. The city procession, consisting of Band Melam, Chenda Melam, Thiruvathira Kali, Koladi, Poikkalottukar, devotees, and soldiers, were sights that electrified the city. It passed through the streets inside the fort. The festival concluded with a grand fireworks display.
The Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple stands as a witness to the First and Second World Wars. The Travancore soldiers who went to participate in the First World War, which took place during the reign of Maharaja Sree Moolam Thirunal, set off on their journey after breaking coconuts and making offerings at the Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple. During the Second World War, a grand farewell was given in Ananthapuri under the leadership of Corporation Mayor Subramoniyan to the first and second regiments that left initially. All of them set out only after breaking coconuts to Lord Pazhavangadi Ganapathy. The soldiers who returned after the war also went home only after breaking coconuts at this temple. Similarly, all those who arrived to participate in the Victory Rally held in the capital also visited this temple. To this day, the Thiruvathira Committee manages the temple administration. It comprises both military officers and civilians.
This temple has been renovated many times. During the 1995-96 period, this temple was modified into the model of Tamil temples. From 1996 to 2018, the structure of the Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple was in the style of Tamil temples.
Water starting to enter the temple due to waterlogging in Pazhavangadi disrupted the temple rituals and caused grief to the devotees. When the Sahasrakalasam was performed in 2017, the temple Thanthri pointed out these shortcomings. Considering the possibility of damage to the temple if prompt action was not taken, the committee consulted the divine will (Devaprasnam) and accordingly started the renovation in May 2018. Following extensive renovation work, the temple was completely reconstructed in the traditional Kerala architectural style. The reconsecration (Punahprathishta) took place on July 11, 2019, and the new temple was dedicated on February 5, 2020.
