The Major Sree Bala Subramanya Swamy Temple in Ulloor is one of the most prominent and spiritually significant shrines dedicated to Lord Muruga (Subramanya) in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Located about 7 kilometers from the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city along the Medical College- Ulloor route, the temple draws thousands of devotees seeking divine grace, career success, and removal of obstacles.

Architectural Style and Complex

  • Kerala Architecture: Built in adherence to traditional Thatchu Sastra and Kerala temple architecture, the complex features a classic sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum), wood carvings, and laterite-and-wood structures.
  • Upadevathas (Sub-Deinities): In addition to the presiding deity Lord Bala Subramanya, the temple complex houses shrines for:
    • Lord Shiva
    • Lord Ganesha (Ganapathy)
    • Anadu Sastha   (Lord Ayyappa )
    • Goddess Yakshi Amma
    • Naga Raja (Serpent deities)
    • Brahma Rakshas
  • Natural Surroundings: Unlike densely urbanized shrines, the temple is nestled in a relatively green pocket (often associated with Ulloor Gardens). The atmosphere is noted for its quietude, and it is common to spot peacocks—the sacred vahana (mount) of Lord Muruga—roaming the temple grounds. There is also a traditional temple pond (kulam) attached to the premises.

Major Festivals and Rituals

  • Thaipooya Kavadi Mahotsavam: Celebrated grandly in the Malayalam month of Makaram (January–February), this is the premier festival of the temple. Devotees perform the Kavadi Aattam—a ritualistic, rhythmic dance carrying ornate, flower-and-feather-decked burdens (Kavadis) on their shoulders—as an offering of penance and devotion to Lord Muruga.
  • Meena Mahotsavam & Annual Arattu: Celebrated during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April), featuring profound temple rituals, cultural programs, traditional music (Nadaswaram), and processional events.
  • Skanda Sashti & Vinayaka Chaturthi: Observed with special homams (such as Ashtadravya Ganapathi Homam), special abhishekams, and profound daily poojas.

History and Legend

·         From Sastha Temple to Lord Subramanya: Examining the early history of this temple reveals that it was originally a Sastha temple. Ayyappa, known back then as 'Annattu Sasthavu', was the principal deity here.

·         Association with the Rulers of Nedumangad: In the past, this temple was under the supervision or authority of the rulers of Nedumangad. Following a divine voice or dream vision experienced by the King of Nedumangad, Sastha requested that his brother Subramanya also be consecrated here.

·         Consecration and Transition: Consequently, in accordance with astrological rules and under the supervision of the king, Balaris Subramanya Swami was consecrated here. It is believed that Lord Subramanya later became the main deity of the temple. Over time, the temple came under the administration of the Travancore Devaswom Board.
