Aniyoor Durga Devi Temple

Durga Devi Temple is a fascinating spot situated at Aniyoor in Chempazhanthy, the birth place of Shri Narayana Guru, at Thiruvananthapuram. The temple is dedicated to goddess Durga, an incarnation of goddess Shakti. This holy spot is where Shri Narayana Guru, the saint and social reformer of Kerala and Brahmasree Chattambi Swamikal met each other.
This temple complex has sub shrines of Lord Ganesh, Nagaraj and Mantramurti. The rajagopuram and figures built in rainbow colors are fascinating. An annual festival is celebrated at the temple.

Anchuthengu, formerly known as Anjengo, is a coastal town near Kadakkavoor in Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. This old Portuguese settlement lies between Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram. Literally the word ‘Anjuthengu’ means 'five coconut palms.’ The whole land is cultivated with coconut trees. The place possesses great archeological and historical importance. In 17th century, the English East India Company selected Anjengo to set up their first trade settlement in Kerala. Queen of Attingal granted the place to the British for trading. They established a factory and a fort here with the permission of the queen. Many ancient churches, an old lighthouse, a 100 year old convent and school, tombs of Dutch and British and the Anjengo Fort are major points of interest here. The churches are built in accordance with the principles of the Portuguese architectural style. The fort played an important role in the war of Mysore in 18th century. Anjuthengu has a beautiful and clean beach. Fishing boats lazily parked on the hot sand and nets drying in the sun are worth seeing. Kaikara village, the birth place of the famous Malayalam poet Kumaran Asan, is located nearby. Anchuthengu Fort is a 16th century building located at Anchuthengu near Kadakkavoor in Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. It is about 10 km from Varkala. Built by the English East India Company, the fort is preserved as a historical monument. The historic significance tagged to Anjengo comes through foreign powers like the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally the English East India Company. In the year 1684, the English East India Company chose Anjengo to establish their first trade settlement in Kerala. Following the English East India Company's presence, the place came to be known as Anjengo, meaning five coconut trees. According to local folk, the name Anjengo owes its genesis to a small area of land with five coconut trees, which was given on lease to the English East India Company by the then Queen of Attingal for trade purposes.
At Anjengo, one can find the remnants of the old English Fort, which was targeted several times by other foreign powers, who were at that time fighting each other to get a firm footing in Kerala. The Fort is now under the protection of National Heritage Monuments. There is also a cemetery inside the fort, which most probably would be having the remains of the occupants of the fort, and the oldest among the burial sites dates to 1704.

Anchuthengu Parish St.Peter's Forane Church is situated in Anjuthengu near Kadakkavoor of Thiruvananthapuram District in Kerala.
The St. Peter’s Church stands as the most colourful feather on the beautiful strip of land of Anchuthengu village. It was the 15th century Portuguese Missionaries who landed at the sea shore who began the active building of this lively Christian Community here. By the beginning of the 16th century, the first church was built.
The Portuguese and the Dutch established Anchuthengu as their business capital for Pepper exports to Europe. In 1684, with the permission of the Queen of Attingal, East India Company began to build their business establishments in Anchuthengu. The Anchuthengu Fort was completed in 1695. Poothura and Kayikara form its boundaries at the south and the west respectively. The Anchuthengu Lake and the Arabian Sea form the boundaries at the east and the west respectively. It covers a geographical area of 311.22 acres.
Anchuthengu was known as Anchingal but the pronounciation of the British changed it as Anjengo which the locals now call as Anchuthengu! There is also a history that says that there were five support stones for head-loads (Anchu thangu) for head-load workers as it was a commercial hub in the past.
The St. Joseph’s School run by the parish was built in 1893 by the Portuguese Missionaries. There are two substations in the parish such as Carmala Matha Church, Chembavu and St. Mary’s Church, Puthennada. There are many institutes in the parish territory such as Sacred Heart convent, St. Mary’s Convent, Sacred Heart Malayalam and English medium schools, Anchuthengu Panchayath Office, Post Office, many Fisheries Offices, and many other NGOs. There are more than 2500 families divided into 11 wards and subdivided into 68 BCC units to facilitate effective and active participation of everyone in the acitivities of the parish as one united family! Attingal Palace


The Attingal palace is situated between Attingal and Kollampuzha on Attingal-Kadakkavoor Road. This Palace had an important role in the history of Kerala. It played a significant role in the growth of the Tranvancore Dynasty. The Attingal Palace gained prominence in the 14th century when Udaya Marthanda Varma ascended the throne of Travancore. He adopted two princesses from the royal family of the Kolathiris of North Malabar. A palace for each one of them was built by the king at Attingal and Kunnummel.
The palace witnessed the first ever united rebellion against the British. The first uprising took place on April 15, 1721. A British contingent comprising 140 men were killed. It triggered off a series of insurrections.
