Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) is an autonomous research institute situated at Poojapura in Thiruavananthapuram District. It functions under the umbrella of Science, Technology and Environment Department of the Government of Kerala. The overall aim of the center is to facilitate in the development of the State and the Nation through the cutting-edge of science by promoting research and manpower development in biotechnology, health care, animal Science, agriculture, environment and basic sciences. In addition, the center offers referral diagnostic services for important human, animal and plant diseases. The library and information services division houses a comprehensive collection of books and journals pertaining to life sciences with emphasis on the field of biotechnology. Facility for DNA fingerprinting - a very powerful technique for the determination of disputed parentage, proving rape cases, crime detection and detecting adulteration of meat - is also available. PCR/ELISA diagnostic tests for Hepatitis-B and C infections, and PCR diagnostic test for tuberculosis, meningitis, herpes and encephalitis are also conducted.

Established in 1857, Connemara market in Palayam is one of the major shopping hubs of the city. It was built during the reign of King Uthradom Thirunal of erstwhile Travancore dynasty to supply day-to-day commodities to the army members. The arched gate which leads to the market was inaugurated by Sir Connemara, Governor of Madras Presidency on his visit to Thiruvananthapuram in 1888 and the market was named ‘Connemara market’ in honour of him.

The University of Kerala, originally called the University of Travancore, was established in 1937 by the then Travancore king, Shri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, long before the State of Kerala was constituted. The jurisdiction of the University is confined to the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and parts of Pathanamthitta. There are regional offices and information centers in all districts.
Situated in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala, and with more than two score departments of teaching and research, and 81 affiliated colleges, the University of Kerala is one of the premier centers of higher education in the State. Along with traditional disciplines, special emphasis is laid on teacher education, distance education and future studies. University College, Thiruvananthapuram established in 1866 was built to impart English education to the common folk of the erstwhile Travancore by H.H. Sri Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma Maharaja. Mr. John Ross, a scholar of repute was appointed Principal of the College. Today, after more than a century of dedicated service to the state, the College stands tall for having produced thousands of luminaries that includes former President of India late Sri. K.R Narayan, Cabinet Secretaries, Ambassadors, Civil Servants, IT doyens, Teachers, Poets, Writers, Artists and Politicians.
Offering 18 UG, 20 PG, 12 M.Phil and 14 Ph. D programmes, the College is undoubtedly vibrant academically. The State Central Library, popularly called the Thiruvananthapuram Public Library is at Palayam in Thiruvananthapuram. Founded in 1829, it is one of the oldest public libraries in India. The king of the erstwhile princely province of Travancore, Swati Thirunal initiated the establishment of the library, completed by the British Resident Colonel Edward Cadogan. The public were given access to the library only from 1898.
The building that houses the library is a fine specimen of Victorian architecture and it still bears the sign 'Victoria Diamond Jubilee Library.' The library has over quarter of a million books in various Indian languages and English. A certificate course in library and information science is conducted by this library. The library works seven days a week, with shorter hours on weekends.
